We are pleased to let you know that our guest speaker for our March 22nd event is our local Beaconsfield resident Elizabeth Péladeau, communication coach and author of My Egregore (also available in French - Mon Égrégore). Ever since she was a little girl, Elizabeth was always inspired by people’s stories. This has led her to an accomplished career in communications in which she uses her knack for capturing the essence of her clients and making them shine. During the pandemic, she started looking at the puzzle that is her own life story. The picture that emerged is captured in her debut book, My Egregore.  The objective of the book:  helps us find pieces of our own life puzzle.

Tickets are $25 and you need to RSVP and send payment by Friday March 17th.

Picture
Thomas Mulcair is a lawyer and political commentator born on October 24, 1954. First elected as a Federal Member of Parliament for the New Democratic Party in a 2007 by-election (Outremont), he became, the very next year, the first New Democrat ever to be elected in a general election in his province of Quebec. Appointed as the Quebec lieutenant of his party, he was one of the architects of the “Orange Wave” which saw the New Democrats take three quarters of the seats in his home province and become, for the first time in the party’s history, the Official Opposition in the Canadian House of Commons. In 2012, he became the leader of the party.

With a government career spanning forty years, Mulcair came to Federal politics after serving three mandates as a provincial member of the Quebec National Assembly (Chomedey, Laval) (1994-2007). From 2003 to 2006, he served as Environment Minister in the Liberal government of Premier Jean Charest and was responsible for implementing Sustainable Development legislation, described as the most avant-garde in North America and still considered cutting-edge to this day.

Having devoted his career to public service, Mulcair was also president of the Office des professions du Québec (1987-1993), the body governing Quebec’s professional orders. He was the first Canadian elected to Board of Directors of CLEAR, the American Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation. Pursuant to the adoption of NAFTA, he lectured widely on its effects on the regulation of professions, including for the American Bar Association and the American Medical Association.

As a lawyer he has worked in the Legislative Affairs branch of the Quebec Justice department and at the Conseil de la langue française and in private law practice for ten years. He was in charge of the revision of the French version of the laws of Manitoba pursuant to the Supreme Court decision. He was Elected régional Secretary of the SPGQ, the Union of Quebec Government professionals, notably during the strike of 1982-1983.

Visiting Professor in the political science Department at l’Université de Montréal from 2018 to 2022 where he taught a Master’s level course in Environment and Sustainable Development, he has also taught at UQTR, Concordia and St‑Lawrence College.

He is a Fellow at the Centre for International Studies (CÉRIUM) and Senior Fellow of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights
He is chairman of the board of Jour de la Terre (Earth Day Canada).
Second in a family of ten children, Mulcair is married to Catherine P. Mulcair. They have two sons and four grand-children.

Guest Speaker: Sam Watts, Executive Director of Welcome Hall Mission

He will be talking about women’s health and a variety of WHM initiatives that are in place to serve women in need.

Established in 1892, Welcome Hall Mission is the largest doorway to help for Montrealers in need.  It operates in 7 locations in the city, has a professional staff team of more than 160 people and an annual budget of approximately 30 million dollars. The Mission has provided services to women since its inception.  An early mission statement included the goal of preventing cruelty to women – a much overlooked societal reality in the early 20th century.

Welcome Hall Mission has a history of offering innovative programs that are designed to help people become independent.  The philosophy is one of offering a “helping hand” rather than a “handout”.  The presentation to the MLUWC will highlight a number of the programs that are offered in 2022 to support those experiencing homelessness, young single mothers, families and at-risk youth in the Montreal region.  It will also cover how the establishment of partnerships with the healthcare network is an essential part of offering effective solutions to the vulnerable and disconnected.

BIOGRAPHY
Sam is the CEO of Welcome Hall Mission, an organization founded in 1892.  It is dedicated to providing shelter, food and love to Montrealers in need.  The Mission has an annual budget of approximately 30 million dollars, more than 160 full time employees and over 400 volunteers.

The Mission is dedicated to eradicating chronic homelessness and hunger in Montreal.  It operates emergency and supported housing services.  It has a mental health treatment unit affiliated with McGill and the Psychiatry Department of the Jewish General Hospital.  It also operates a free Dental Clinic, managed in a partnership with McGill University’s Faculty of Dentistry.  The youth services team manages an innovative program called “Coeur a Soeur” that provides practical support to young mothers and their children.

Sam is the author of “Good Work Done Better”, a book that proposes ideas for how community-based non-profit organizations can improve their impact.  He has also authored numerous articles that have appeared in local and national publications.

He began his career in management at a Fortune 100 company in Montreal. In various global leadership roles, he learned to understand and appreciate principles that are required to turn good teams into high-performing teams.  From 2001 to 2015, he was a team effectiveness consultant to corporations, governments and not for profit organizations acting as a catalyst, facilitator and executive coach.

Sam serves on a number of non-profit boards including The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness and L’Arche Canada.  He lives in Beaconsfield, QC.

Potluck Events January 17, 2022
Due to growing concern with the circulating Covid variants (Delta and Omicron) we have decided to hold only virtual meetings on Zoom for our Potluck event on Monday January 17, 2022. In-person meetings are not recommended by Santé Québec at this time. As with the last successful Potluck event in January 2021 participants will be assigned to a group of 4-6 persons and will show and discuss their pot luck dishes virtually within their private groups.
There will be 2 virtual events to choose from: Lunch 11:30am-1pm Dinner 5:30pm-7pm or sign up for both times if you so wish. Sign up will start after January 1st 2022 and we’ll send you further details later. It might be fun to do a little online research for potluck recipes, choose a new one to try out on January 17 or before and share your critique with your group.
We hope to see you all healthy and happy on January 17.
Happy New Year!

Christmas Charity

While we will be meeting in person this Christmas, we will not be raffling off baskets for charity, because many of the Interest Groups are still not meeting. That being said, the Club Executive does not want to miss out on the opportunity to do good in the community at this difficult time.

Concerned by the impact of the pandemic on mental health, the charity we have chosen for this year is Friends of Mental Health. For those who were present at the November meeting when Victoria Kucynzski gave a wonderful presentation, you will know about the remarkable work being done in the West Island by this organization based in Beaconsfield. For more information, please check out their web site:
You may wish to consider donating the $5 you would normally contribute to each interest group leader, as well as the amount you would normally spend on raffle tickets. Like the raffle tickets and interest group donations, this donation would not be eligible for charitable receipts because the MLUWC is not a registered charity.

We thank you in advance for helping to keep this community tradition alive.
There are three easy ways you can donate before November 30th:
1. Write a cheque made out to the MLUWC and mail it to our post office box:
P.O. Box 383
Pointe- Claire, QC
H9R 4P3
2. Send an Interac Transfer via your Online Banking
For this operation, please check the email sent to you for instructions.
3. Use our paypal link above
Since we pay a small amount to process PayPal payments, we kindly ask that you only use this method for donations of $20 or more..

Launch of the 2021/22 Season (Zoom)

Picture
Date: Wednesday September 15th, 2021
(Yes, Wednesday to keep with our tradition of having season launch on Wednesdays)
Time: 7:00 p.m.
The program for the evening is as follows:
  • 7:00pm: We will start off with a bring your own cocktail/beverage with munchies and a little chit-chat to catch up on the latest news.
  • 7:30pm: Meeting
  • 8:00pm: Our panel discussion "What's with this housing market?" takes centre stage

Going once, twice….sold?! As we’ve learned, we’re in a real estate bubble…or are we? The housing market has been a hot topic since the onset of the pandemic. We’ve all heard stories of soaring prices, bidding wars and scarcity of properties for sale. Come join us September 15 via Zoom to listen and learn more from three certified residential and commercial real estate brokers. Linda Sestock is with Royal LePage, Georgiana Cretu with Adresz, and Pauline van Nieuwburg is with RE/MAX. Based on their collective vast experience, they will provide us with practical suggestions on how to navigate current market conditions, and they will arm us with the knowledge we need to improve our decision making.

In an upbeat and inspirational evening, Gina Cody will introduce us to her "Three Stages of Life".  The first stage is where you are taught and nurtured by your parents, teachers and your environment. The recent legalization of cannabis has triggered a tremendous amount of economic activity in Canada with an increasing number of companies setting up to produce raw material and derivatives in demand for both pharmacological and recreational markets. The Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of McGill University is preparing to set up a high-level training program for those interested in working in the burgeoning industry related to medicinal cannabis. The challenges in the industry range from quality control to the genetics of the plant, its sensitivity to pathogens and its complicated chemistry.

Picture

Speaker: Colin Rose, M.D., Ph.D.
Monday, November 12, 2018
Karnak Shriners' Temple
3350 Sources Blvd., DDO
7 pm

Dr. Colin Rose will speak about cardio-metabolic diseases which are a spectrum of metabolic derangements, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and atherosclerosis that are directly related to lifestyle choices that kill and maim millions of people per year. Treatment of these diseases by surgery and drugs is expensive and largely futile in terms of life expectancy. For example, the USA spends far more than any other developed country on its medical system but has the lowest of any measure of health. This talk will explain how the individual’s environment can cause disease and describe current recommendations to optimize habits to prevent and treat cardio-metabolic disease.

Janet Torge: “Radical Resthomes: A Senior Housing Shake-up”

Monday, February 12, 2018, 7:15 pm
Karnak, 3300 Sources Blvd., DDO
Janet Torge currently wears the hats of television documentary producer, bookkeeper, archivist and prenatal teacher. In past careers, she’s been a radio talk-show host and traffic reporter, Montreal Gazette columnist, author, construction site manager, software manual creator and co-founder of the first rape relief centre in Canada.
Radical Resthomes was conceived when her friends put her in charge of their senior housing some 30 years ago.  The vision has changed considerably since then, and Janet has aged--along with everyone else-- but she has never lost sight of the idea and is determined to foster more and more self-directed housing projects in the future.
